Ten years earlier two missionaries had been killed by the inhabitants, which forced the British Protectorate to put the islands off limits.
Lambert’s tales captivated Crocker and forever changed his life. Upon returning to San Francisco, he transformed Zaca into a scientific research vessel and set out on the first of eight important scientific expeditions.
Two years later, Crocker returned to Fiji to pick up Dr. Lambert and other eminent scientists for the trip to the Solomons and Rennell and Bellona Islands.
Crocker and his crew of scientists spent over two weeks there conducting medical tests and performing inoculations, discovering hundreds of new species of fauna and flora and documenting the pre-missionary lives of the inhabitants with still photos and motion picture film.
